A brief history of skateboarding and caps

Flexfit cap history

Skateboarders love to wear Flexfit caps because they look great and are very practical, but how did this start?

Beginnings

Skateboards have been around since the 1940s. They were fist used by Californian surfers who wanted to be active when sea conditions were unsuitable for surfing.

In 1976, there was a severe drought in California when homeowners had to drain their swimming pools. People who love to skate decided to convert these empty swimming pools into miniature skate parks. Then, concrete skate parks began to be constructed to cater for the increasing number of skaters.

Soon professional skateboarders began to emerge earning prize money from competitions and sponsorship deals.

In the 1980s skaters went beyond the skate park and simply skating down quiet streets. They used street furniture such as railings, walls and steps as places to perform stunts and tricks.

Skate clothing

Clothes are very important to skateboarders. You can skate in most athletic wear, but skaters want more fashionable and distinctive clothing. They favour streetwear – loose clothing inspired by sportswear that allows them to move freely and with distinctive designs and logos decorating them. The baseball style hat is the headwear of choice for skateboarders. A crash helmet may be more practical wear for a sport where falls are common, but many skaters prefer wearing the Flexfit snapback cap.

Snapback caps keep the face shaded and the head protected from the harsh sun. Sweatbands keep the head cool and dry. They fit snugly and comfortably and will not fall off when performing skate tricks.

Skateboarding has spread far beyond California and is seen all over the world. In every country where there are skaters, Flexfit Snapbacks are worn by enthusiasts. Some skaters wear blank Flexfit caps, but most like to wear custom caps that have a logo or snappy slogan printed or embroidered on them.

Flexfit hats can be bought from large retailers and sportswear shops, but skateboarders like to gather at specialist skateboard stores that sell the clothing designed for skateboarding. These shops sell custom Flexfit Snapback caps that have the brands and logos of board makers and other brands that target the skate community.

At Flexfit, we make caps that skateboarders love to wear when skating and keep wearing when they hang out with their skateboarding community. We make the caps for skaters that look stylish but are also very practical, durable and extremely comfortable to wear.
